Having cycled off-road around Surrey for a few years now, I am still very impressed how good Surrey is for mountain biking. There are so many bridleways in Surrey, most of them are relatively unknown, offering countless options for MTB riders. It is relatively easy with a bit of planning to put together a 50km loop with 45 km off road.
Back in June 20, I was invited by my friend and cycling coach Dave to join him on the “Surrey Solstice 100” which was actually closer to 175 km than 160 km (100 miles) owing to a few diversions. It was great fun as we covered most of the Surrey’s MTB highlights including Devils’ punchbowl, Leith Hill, Box Hill to name a few and even a few more bordering Surrey such as Black Down (near Haslemere).
After a few beers one Saturday night of December 22 came the idea of creating a 200km off-road loop, and more importantly riding it.
The “Tour of Surrey” was born although you may notice that we will venture into Hampshire and West Sussex.
Details of the route are still being worked on, and the route will have to be fully recced over the next months.
This is a pure MTB event (hard tail or full-suspension). It will be challenging but the spirit of the Tour of Surrey is a ride amongst like-minded friends, not a race.
